Getting started

The best product categories for first-time resellers

9 min read · published

The best first categories are small, light, hard to break, cheap to sample and easy to describe accurately: drinkware and tumblers, fashion jewelry, phone and device accessories, and basic apparel in limited sizes. The hardest for beginners are electronics with batteries, anything sized or fitted, fragile homeware and food or cosmetics, because of returns, shipping restrictions and regulation.

Five traits worth more than enthusiasm

Score any category you are considering against these before ordering.

  • Small and light. Shipping cost is a permanent tax on bulky products.
  • Hard to damage. Every broken item is a refund plus a lost unit plus a bad review.
  • Low variant count. Fifteen sizes and colours means fifteen ways to hold dead stock.
  • Cheap to sample. If testing costs $200, you will test once and guess afterwards.
  • Honest to describe. If the product only sells when the listing overstates it, returns will find you.

Categories that behave well for beginners

Drinkware and tumblers: steady year-round demand, low return rate, robust in transit, and easy to photograph well with daylight and a plain surface.

Fashion jewelry and moissanite: very high value-to-weight ratio, cheap to post, and buyers expect clear specification — stone size, plating, chain length — which rewards accurate listings.

Device accessories: consistent demand, tiny shipping cost, and simple compatibility information that customers search for directly.

Basic apparel in two or three sizes: workable if you resist stocking a full size run on the first order.

Categories that quietly punish beginners

Battery-powered electronics carry shipping restrictions, higher fault rates and warranty expectations. Sized clothing and footwear generate returns from fit alone. Fragile homeware turns transit into a lottery. Food, supplements and cosmetics bring labelling and safety rules that are not optional and not cheap.

None of these are impossible. They are simply expensive places to learn, and the lesson costs the same whichever category you learn it in.

Seasonal categories: timing beats product choice

Seasonal goods can work well, but the calendar is unforgiving. Winter outerwear needs to be sourced in late summer, sampled within two weeks and listed before the first cold snap, because demand arrives and leaves faster than a reorder cycle.

If your first attempt is seasonal, plan the whole timeline backwards from the selling window and add three weeks for the supplier being slower than promised.
