Getting started
Wholesale or dropshipping: which one should a beginner choose?
8 min read · published
Choose wholesale if you have a few hundred dollars and want control over quality, delivery speed and margin. Choose dropshipping if cash is your binding constraint and you can accept thin margins, long delivery times and no control over what the customer receives. Wholesale risks money on unsold stock; dropshipping risks your reputation on someone else's fulfilment.
What each model actually asks of you
Wholesale means you buy a quantity up front, hold it, and ship it yourself. Your money is at risk before any sale, and in exchange you control the unit cost, the packaging, the dispatch time and the ability to inspect goods before a customer sees them.
Dropshipping means the supplier ships each order directly to your customer. You risk very little cash, and in exchange you accept their stock accuracy, their packing, their transit times and their mistakes — while your name is on the order.
Side by side on the things that decide it
The trade-off is consistent across categories:
- Cash needed up front: wholesale, hundreds; dropshipping, close to nothing beyond a storefront.
- Typical margin: wholesale, healthier because you buy at volume price; dropshipping, thin because you pay near single-unit price.
- Delivery time: wholesale, you post it the same day; dropshipping, often one to three weeks.
- Quality control: wholesale, you can inspect; dropshipping, you find out when the customer does.
- Main risk: wholesale, dead stock; dropshipping, refunds and chargebacks from delivery and quality complaints.
The hybrid most experienced resellers end up using
Test demand with a tiny wholesale order rather than with dropshipping, because holding ten units teaches you the product. Then, once a line sells reliably, buy deeper on that one product and let the supplier ship larger restocks directly to a fulfilment point.
This keeps discovery cheap and scaling boring, which is the correct way round.
What both models require regardless
A supplier who answers messages, a written unit price and minimum order, an accurate listing, and a refund policy you can honour without arguing. Neither model rescues you from a supplier who disappears, and neither model makes a bad product sell.
